As most of you know, I recently won an online voting contest to become a Social Media Brand Ambassador for the German National Tourist Office. It was a month-long, extremely competitive contest, which had us all stressing and virtually harassing everyone we knew with a Facebook account.
Since the winners were announced, I haven’t shared very many trip details. You’re probably wondering…
How Did I Win?
After a LONG month of voting, not to mention the hectic final days, the Germany Tourism Brand Ambassador contest closed on August 22 at 11:59 p.m. In order to win, I had to secure either a first- or second-place position, which I hadn’t according to the tally on Facebook; I was approximately 40 votes behind second place when the contest closed.
What I didn’t know, though, was that the tally on Facebook didn’t include all the votes! You guys were voting for me across Twitter, Instagram and Vine too, which is what closed the gap. There were so many votes to validate and tally that the organizers spent tireless days after the contest closed to finalize the winners. While it was an additional stressful week awaiting the details, it couldn’t have been any more perfect.
We had just had a blast at our first Orlando City SC match, you know … besides getting soaked, and we were about to head home. My phone started blowing up and then I saw it!! I was literally screaming out of excitement in the streets of downtown Orlando at midnight. I can’t even express how excited I was (and still am!).
I’m going to Germany, silly! The official itinerary has not been revealed just yet, but my travel dates have been confirmed: I’ll be in Germany Oct. 27 through Nov. 4! I’ll let you all try to guess which region I’ll be visiting. 😉 But really, stay tuned for updates on that.
How Did I Get So Many Votes?
I think one of my most brilliant ideas during the contest was to create a Facebook event for the contest where I posted every single day. I wanted to give people the chance to opt-in to my (mostly silly) updates without clogging everyone else’s newsfeeds. This was my primary contributor to votes. A couple giveaways in this event gave my friends another incentive to vote besides helping a friend out. And OBVIOUSLY, my other brilliant idea was being friends with Frank and let him morph me into almost 50 different German-inspired photos that helped keep the voting top of mind, funny and fun in general!
On that note, one of the giveaways I ran was that of a special souvenir from Germany for one of the lucky folks in my private Facebook event. I’m happy to announce that the winner of the souvenir is my good friend, JANICE! Congrats and I can’t wait to find something extra-cool for you.
This contest has already opened so many doors for me and I hope this trip is the beginning of much more travel writing in the near future. Thanks again to everyone who made this possible – I am forever grateful! =)
